PREMIUM WALL DECALS FOR KIDS' SPACES

How to Design a Construction Truck Kids Bedroom That Actually Looks Good

Written by: Cathy Heck

Do you have a little truck lover in your family? We do, too. Which is exactly why we set out to design a construction truck bedroom that brings all the joy of trucks… and still feels beautiful in your home.

Designing a Construction Truck Bedroom with Color That Feels Calm

The magic is in the artwork. Our decals begin as hand-painted watercolor illustrations, which means the colors are naturally soft, layered, and easy to live with.

Instead of bold primary shades, you’ll find warm yellows, dusty blues, and gentle neutrals that blend beautifully into a real home.

Pull a few tones from the artwork and carry them across walls, textiles, or furniture for a room that feels cohesive without trying too hard. A construction theme can feel playful without seeming overdone.

PRO TIP: If you’re painting before adding decals, give walls two weeks to fully cure. Plenty of time for pre-nest nesting!

Here are a few paint colors to get you started. We’ve included HEX codes so you can match them to any brand you like.

As always, test swatches in your own light. Your walls may already be the perfect backdrop.

How to Layer Patterns Without the Clutter

We think a well-designed kids room mixes patterns the same way a great outfit does.

Start with one “hero” print (like the wall decals) :-) then layer in quieter patterns like stripes, small geometrics, or soft textures. Keep the color palette consistent and vary the scale—this helps everything feel collected, not busy.

The room reveal: a room that feels playful for children and pulled together for you. Who knew trucks could be so stylish?

Once Upon a Truck: Some of Our Favorite Books

We think one of the best things about any children’s room design is the books that go in it. We’ve collected quite a few truck books over the years, and these are the ones we keep coming back to.

From the classic charm of Richard Scarry to the sleepy sweetness of Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site, these are the stories that somehow get requested again and again. Because even the busiest little builders eventually need to wind down.

4 favorite bedtime story books with trucks as a theme

Cars and Trucks and Things That Go by Richard Scarry

You can never go wrong with a Richard Scarry book. Around here, we just pace ourselves... otherwise the questions could go on all night.

The Old Truck by Jarrett Pumphrey and Jerome Pumphrey

A sweet story of renewal with the kind of retro illustrations that make design-loving parents very happy. A quiet favorite at bedtime.

Every Monday Mabel by Jashar Awan

A Caldecott Award book for 2026. It’s our newest favorite for a reason... simple, thoughtful, and fun for reader and child to guess how it will end.

Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld

And, last, but not least. We love a truck book that is perfect for winding down, because even the busiest little builders need their rest. Sweet dreams

A Little Inspiration Behind the Collection

This collection was inspired by real, truck-loving little ones in our own world. Anything with wheels has always been a win around here.

But we wanted to create something that feels just as good to live with as it is fun to play in. A space that sparks imagination for them. And still feels like home for you.

Because the best rooms grow right alongside them.

And, from the entire Mej Mej family, good luck with your newest construction project. We hope it’s on time, on budget… and adorable.
